This sounds great. I’m a recent college grad (U of M) with a degree in Business Administration. I’m responsible, timely, efficient, and have a great attitude. Totally negotiable on compensation. When can we get started?

    Sincerely,
    Nathan

I’m in and out of planes today so my window to call is very limited. I tried the number that you attached a few minutes ago but no one answered. Out of curiousity - when could you get started?

    What is your number?

Like I was trying to explain before, I’m on a plane right now and can’t call. (Thankfully American has great wifi.) I’ll be Minneapolis in a few hours and I’ll call then. But I’d still like to know when you’re available and your compensation requirements.

    Thank you.

Please follow instructions. Leave your number. Call when you are back in town. Compensation is on the post, $13.00 per hour. You should know this before contacting someone, makes you look like you don’t pay attention to details.

Yes- as I said, I will call when I’m back in town. I’d like to start you off at $12.00 for a month as a trial basis and then move you up to $13 when things work out. (I’m sure they probably will. You sound great, but I have had some bad experiences with finding assistants on Craigslist in the past.) I think this is a position with a lot of growth potential so I don’t want you to think I’m undercutting you - I’m only trying to work out something that’s fair to everyone. I would also be willing to talk about benefits and a 401k after a month as well.

Let me know if that sounds fair.

I think it’d be a lot of fun to work with you.

    Nate

David - Our communications seem to have stopped. I just wanted to check back in and see if you’re interested/serious about this. If the $12 thing is a serious stumbling block for you, I’d be open to starting you there - provided you have references. Are you available next Monday to meet for coffee and an formal interview?

David- I haven’t heard back from you via email and once again I got no answer at the number you provided. This is no way to negotiate. I’m starting to doubt whether or not you really want this position - you’re not showing much initiative at this point. Please let me know ASAP so I know if I should be considering other candidates.

Hi David. I hate to write this email. Really, I do. But I’m afraid your services will no longer be needed. I had high hopes when we started talking. Your experience and years in this business community could have made you a valuable part of my team. I tried to extend you every courtesy and every opportunity, but you consistently let me down and failed to follow through. Those are flaws I can’t have in an assistant at this time.

I have high hopes that we still at least salvage a business friendship. I’d like to buy you a cup of coffee sometime and learn a bit more about you. Maybe we could even work together in the future. Please let me know if there’s a time that works best for you. Or I can have my new assistant coordinate our schedules if that works better. (He’s very good.)

    Nate

I’m not sure what you are talking about. I was considering hiring YOU as my assistant.

Now I’m completely confused. I tried to reread your ad, but it appears to have been pulled. I’m not sure why someone with my pedigree, scholarship, experience, and resume would be applying for assistant level openings. I’m truly sorry that you were so mistaken. But now that we’ve developed this connection, would you be interested in applying for a position?

    Sincerely,
    Nathan

I’m sorry to hear that. I think you’re missing out on an opportunity with a lot of grown potential.

I just want to say one word to you. Just one word. Are you listening?

    PLASTICS.

There’s a great future in plastics. Think about it.

    You in?

(p.s. - your phone email is miscapitalizing iPhone. Its very distracting.)
